My roomate has an older gateway computer that he wants to fix up a little so he can run WoW on it. Anyone have any suggestions as far as graphics cards and memory that could help?

How old is it? 1st step is to check if the video slot on its motherboard is a PCIEX/PCIEX 2.0.

Sassy why does my laptop suddenly shutdown sometimes when running WoW, literally power off complete, and will only turn back on if I remove the battery, and put it back in, and press on. It's absolutely maddening as I know it isn't the temperature of the laptop, since it's played in a room that is kept at approximately 50 degrees F. It also seems to happen when I'm in WoW, then alt-tab and open a new Firefox window. I was thinking there was something wrong with the wi-fi/ethernet cards seeing as the Wi-Fi periodically just drops out on it, and sometimes the LAN connection is slow for no reason. Goddamn Lenovo T61P, and the P is for piece of shit

Post counts are for nubs, Cal your computer just sucks, and Bohemus, as the first couple people said, your best upgrades depend on what that beast currently has in it.

Could be a combination of things. More likely that you are switching windows or doing something graphically intensive that causes graphic driver to crash. When a graphic driver crashes your computer will immediately shutdown with no error log left or bluescreen for diagnostics.

On a sidenote your LAN or WAN can fail without causing immediate shutdown. Computer power off only happens when a CRITICAL component fails.

My suggestion is as follows:

1) If you are not using a 64 bit operating system, upgrade to windows 7 64 bit. IF POSSIBLE

2) If that is not possible get the most up to date drivers for ALL components in your system.

3) Blow out your laptop, and apply new thermal paste to the GPU and CPU.

4) All else fails... Get really drunk and destroy your laptop in an imaginative fashion and record it for us.

I punched a 9 inch hole in the wall 2 years ago over the computer....I wasn't drunk though, and my computer was working fine....I just lost the roll on Executioner in Zul'Aman. And no I'm not kidding. I also snapped my headset in half and shattered the remains against the opposite wall. People can attest to the event in question.

The graphically intensive thing is possible, since it happens most often when playing WoW, but that is it. It also happens when leaving WoW and opening a Firefox windo. The thing that is weird to me, is that when it does shutdown, I cannot just hit the power button to turn it back on, I have to remov ethe battery and the AC adapter plug and then reinsert them to turn it back on.

I am proud to say that I was a part of that ZA run. One of the funniest sober moments I had in this game. The greatest part of all of it was we all conspired to roll knowing we would let CJ have it anyway. By far one of the most infamous vent blowups ever..... thanks for the run down memory lane..... its shit like that that I truly miss you guys.

Damnit. Last night the computer shut off when I logged off my account and was just sitting at the main log in screen for WoW to switch over to Amanda's account. Fucking ridiculous. I sent this laptop in like 5 times when it was under warranty. Now it's not, but I'm going to scream and yell and get them to fix it or at least tell me what the problem is.

New development (now that I've thoroughly derailed Joel's request for help)....yesterday, my girlfriend was using my laptop on the Wi-Fi with no problems, then she goes over to the computer room, plugs in the ethernet cord attached to the router, and disables the Wi-Fi connection from the task bar. Computer immediately shuts down. It seems fluky to me, however, there is a strong correlation between heavy network card load, and the shutdowns.

I have had my suspicions about my router in the past being faulty, but i cannot foresee a situation in which the router itself would have an electrical surge over the communication lines to shutdown the laptop. I don't know what it could be, because I know it is not overheating.

I did not mention. But even with your network card not being a required crucial component, you also could have a short. UNLIKELY

Please run a diagnostic on your computer. I am thinking you could have a faulty ram module. But nothing works better at diagnosing than PC-CHECK..

Since this is a private forum. I might reccomend this "Public download" please regonize that Pc-check is a licence based program..

So I ran memtest86+ over night the other day, and there were no failures, and all tests repeatedly passed.

I have been able to recreate the shutdown. It most often occurs when on the WoW login screen, or when trying to alt tab and open a new firefox window. I could see possibly that opening a new firefox window while having the game open could potentially add a great deal of load, but I'm also wondering if it could possibly be the graphics drives for my specific laptop. THere have been people with issues with the laptop and gaming.

I would like to run PC-Check, however, when I downloaded the torrent, it just gave me a bunch of .rar files all of the same size, and all seemingly with the same components within. After I download the torrent what should I do next?

If you already have winrar, just extract to a destination. Those little peices will build one big piece. You may need to do another extraction right after as well.

Cheers
