Hockey is cool, but not better than football. I don't think you can really compare the two sports. Hockeys brother sport is soccer or rugby.

I don't think anyone said hockey was better than football, and I knowing from arguments in the past, Brian will rip his shirt off and do a war dance if anyone says otherwise. The comparison to soccer is legitimate, but no sport can match hockey for edge of your seat action. Sure, football can have the one big play that is both unpredicatble and exciting, but there is also about 40 seconds in between each play. Hockey is non-stop, you change lines on the fly and if you blink, you missed the goal. It's harder to watch than football because there are enough rules that are odd in comparison to football: icing, offsides, interference. Hell, it's a sport that tries to stifle the opportunity for break aways with it's line rules. But the fact remains, at any second in any time of any game, something amazing could happen, but unlike football, 3 seconds later something amazing could happen again while football is still in the huddle or on commercial break. Oh, and don't argue that the commercial breaks are for the players because they are tired, in the playoffs, there are no commercials during overtime. So after you've played a full game, you don't get a breather.

I'll give you the whole time out and 40 second thing but really most the time that whole 40 sec is not used up and at the end of most games there are fast paced no huddles.
Hockey has its slow points when they hit the puck down the ice for icing or stand there fighting over a puck for a short period of time. up against the wall... it has a lot of back and forth.

I think, the great thing about football is the distances and the chance of a big play to reverse the field ( fumble, INT)

Both are good sports football has the upper hand.

I personally know my football games don't last as long and tend to be more up tempo, but our referees make more bad calls and no instant replay.

The problem I see with Hockey is that the highlight of the game is people fighting each other.. and for that I'd rather watch UFC
Football just has many more possible high points, in the end, for ME, makes it more exciting.
